Second half surge pushes BC past WVU-Tech

A 23-2 run from BC in the second half lifted the Lady Rams to victory, Tuesday.

Box Score BLUEFIELD, Va. – A 42-19 second half from the Bluefield College women's basketball team lifted the squad to a 75-48 victory over West Virginia Tech at the Dome Gymnasium on Tuesday evening.
 
Over the final 20 minutes of play, the Lady Rams (1-1) shot 14-for-28 (.500) from the field and forced nine Golden Bear turnovers to pull away for their first victory of the 2013-14 season. West Virginia Tech drops to 0-2 with the loss.
 
Senior guard Teqa McNeal shot an efficient 9-for-13 from the floor and knocked down five of her eight from the free throw line en route to a game high 23 points. Asia Wheeler was six-for-nine shooting and hit all seven of her free throws to tally 20 points. Wheeler also pulled down a game high nine rebounds.
 
Three different Lady Rams had three assists, while Destiny Tolliver registered five blocked shots.
 
West Virginia Tech took advantage of BC turnovers during the opening nine and a half minutes of play, never allowing BC to take a lead. However, the Golden Bears largest lead was just three points, with the Lady Rams tying the contest on six occasions.
 
A Maryah Mazyck bucket in transition gave the hosts their first lead at 18-16 and sparked a 13-3 run over the following six minutes. Wheeler tossed in five during the span, McNeal four and Janee Simmons capped the rally with a pair of free throws.
 
But, the visitors showed resilience and cut BC's lead all the way down to two points and ended the half trailing by just four points, 33-29.
 
West Virginia Tech began the second half with a Roche Wimberly layin to cut its deficit to two again, but that would be the closest the Golden Bears came the rest of the night.
 
A 5-0 spurt from the visitors closed the Lady Rams' lead to three, 41-38, with 15:39 to play, but Bluefield then picked up both its defensive intensity and offensive attack, outscoring the Golden Bears 23-2.
 
Bluefield used a balanced attack during the run which came over just over 10 minutes of action. McNeal and Tolliver posted six points apiece, while Wheeler and Megan Tennant tossed in four apiece. Mazyck added three more.
 
The Lady Rams cruised in over the final five minutes for the 75-48 victory.
 
Bluefield ended the game shooting 25-for-55 (45.5%) from the field, and a solid 23-for-27 (82.5%) from the charity stripe. Conversely, the Golden Bears concluded the game shooting 19-for-65 (29.2%) overall and a meager 7-for-18 (38.9) at the free throw line.
 
The Lady Rams scored 38 of their points in the paint and narrowly outscored the visitors in second chance points (12-10) and bench points (14-13)
 
Bluefield will play its second exhibition game of the season on Friday, travelling to Marshall University for an 11:30 a.m. game.
