Lady Rams roar back for 80-76 win over BSC

BLUEFIELD, W. Va. – The Lady Rams went on a 27-9 run to flip the tables on Bluefield State College, Tuesday evening at Ned Shott Gymnasium, en route to an 80-76 win in the Battle of the Bluefields. It is Bluefield College's sixth straight win in the series, while it holds an 8-2 advantage in the matchup over the last decade.

Bluefield (2-1), under the direction of interim head coach Jessica Brokaw, faced a 14-point deficit, 67-53 in the second half before ripping off its 27-9 rally to close the game.

Senior Janee Simmons led the charge in the waning minutes, scoring eight points in just over the final two minutes of action. A pair of free throws closed the gap to 75-72, while she scored a layin to trim the lead to just one for the hosts.

Asia Wheeler squared the game for the first time since the first half by hitting two free throws of her own with 1:15 remaining.

With time winding down under 30 seconds, Wheeler found Simmons for a score in the paint to give BC its first lead of the second half, 78-60. However, Simmons missed the free throw as she looked for the old fashioned three-point play.

An empty possession from the Lady Blues followed, while Simmons was fouled and knocked down both shots from the charity stripe to extend the final score to 80-76 for the Lady Rams.

Unofficially, Simmons led BC with 39 points, while Teqa McNeal tossed in 21 in the winning effort.
