BLUEFIELD, Va. -- The Bluefield College volleyball team defeated Hollins University, 3-1 (15-19, 27-29, 25-20, 25-16), Tuesday night at the Dome Gymnasium.
The first set battled back and forth until the Rams separated themselves with a run about halfway through. After BC took a slim lead early, Hollins battled back to 10-9 causing Rams Head Coach
Jim Butski to call a timeout. Following the break in the action, BC went on a 5-2 run to open up a 15-11 advantage. They hosts held their cushion, then closed out strongly for the 25-19 set one win.
Set two saw Hollins grab a lead early, as much as a 13-6 advantage over Bluefield. However, the resilient Rams fought back to even the score at 16-all. Bluefield even grabbed a 22-20 lead, but the teams then stood deadlocked, trading points back-and-forth from 22 all the way to 27-27. Hollins gained a 28-27 edge before a bizarre set-ending play. A hard-struck attack from
Amber Taylor-Inge caught a flinching Hollins player, striking their shoulder and returning the ball across the net. The ball landed just inside the line for the set winner, pulling the match even, 1-1.
Bluefield started swiftly in the third, gathering a 9-2 advantage. The Rams built up a lead as much as 20-8, before Hollins attempted a come back with a 10-3 run. However, Bluefield closed out the set by a score of 25-20.
The Rams quickly moved through the third and final set for their biggest margin of victory on the evening. They opened up a margin of as much as 21-11, and finished off the contest with a 25-16 win.
Jasmine Morrow's 22 kills led BC's attack with
Sydney Spencer totaling 40 assists on the night, tying her season high.
Three Rams totaled double-digit digs, led by 16 from
Hannah Winter.
Steffi Dutton added 12, while Morrow tallied 11.
Ashlyn Van Dyke,
Sydney Spencer and
Amber Taylor-Inge scored two service aces apiece.
Five different Rams recorded blocks, while
Marissa Grice and
Amber Taylor-Inge both tallied three block assists.
Bluefield continues a three-game homestand on Thursday, hosting MSC foe University of Rio Grande at 6 p.m.
