GREENVILLE, S.C. -- After winning their own senior game on Sunday, the Bluefield College women's soccer team spoiled Bob Jones University's senior night on Tuesday, claiming a 2-0 win at Alumni Stadium.
The Rams (7-5-1) took advantage of the Bruins' 10-day gap between games, controlling possession early in the game.
Tori Doyle lifted the visitors to a 1-0 lead thanks to her
first goal of the season in the 17th minute. Doyle made a strong cut through the top right side of the box and was set up perfectly by
Pip Pattison, striking the shot past Bob Jones keeper Tori Anderson.
Bluefield held a 9-4 shot advantage through the opening 45 minutes, with
Kayla Richardson saving the Bruins' sole shot on goal.
In the second half, Bob Jones cut Bluefield's shots back a little bit, but could not get on the board themselves.
In the 60th minute of action,
Jessica Newman converted her
fifth goal of the season. Her shot was deflected off a Bruin defender and found the back of the net to give the Rams a 2-0 lead.
Bob Jones coach Chris Carmichael credited the Rams' defense during the game, saying, "They brought a pretty fast pressuring system and we didn't match it. It forced us into a frantic mess at times..." BC's defense held the Bruins to just nine shots on the night, the lowest opponent total since the Rams' Sept. 18 matchup with the University of Pikeville.
Richardson held strong in the second half in BC's net, saving the host's three shots on goal en route to her second straight shutout and fourth such game of the season.
Bluefield steps back into Mid-South Conference play on Saturday as the season begins to wind down. Play against the Patriots of the University of the Cumberlands is slated to begin at 2 p.m.
