Barton steals 2OT win from women's soccer

Box Score

BLUEFIELD, W. Va. – Jessica Newman's goal in the 87th minute squared Tuesday evening's women's soccer game at 1-1, but the Bulldogs of Barton College pulled out the victory thanks to Taylor Parrish's goal in the second overtime period.

Bluefield levels its record to 5-5 following the non-conference matchup with NCAA DII program Barton, who ups its 2013 mark to 6-3. The OT defeat is the first for Bluefield this season, who was playing in their third such game.

The Rams and Bulldogs battled back and forth throughout the evening, with each team having stretches where their offense controlled possession.

Barton began with a strong first half, outshooting the hosts by a 13-5 margin. However, the Bulldogs only put three of those shots on target, with Bluefield having four scoring opportunities on its five shots.

Emily Futral netted her fifth goal of the season in the 18th minute of play to lift Barton to a 1-0 lead. The goal came shortly after a Bluefield foul, setting up a free kick from several yards inside midfield. Futral corralled the loose ball following the kick and found the back of the net.

In the second half of action, Bluefield controlled the ball much more on its offensive end and made several strong scoring threats in an attempt to square the game. However, Barton keeper Carson Moore continually put herself in good position on the Rams' shots on goal to keep the hosts scoreless.

Bluefield finally broke through with less than four minutes remaining in regulation as Newman placed a shot out of Moore's reach and into the upper left corner of the goal. Newman fired the shot near the right edge of the box, with Pip Pattison helping set up the goal.

Barton recorded two more shots in the remaining minutes, but a Richardson save and an off-target shot kept the score knotted, 1-1, and sent the game into overtime.

Parrish posted a pair of shots for Barton in the first 10-minute overtime frame, but Richardson continued to hold the Bulldogs at one goal. Her two saves in the first overtime brought her save total to 10 for the night.

Newman nearly clinched Bluefield's third OT victory of the season as the first overtime period wound down, but a leaping save from Moore on a diagonal shot sent the game to its second overtime.

Pattison posted the first shot in the second overtime, but Moore tallied her 12th and final save. Following Moore's save, Barton quickly transitioned to their side of the field, with Parrish taking the ball herself from midfield to the top of the box, where she fit her shot just below the crossbar and out of the reach of Richardson.

Barton held a 27-17 advantage in shots on the night, but the Rams held a slim 13-12 advantage in shots being on goal. Bluefield had two corner kicks to just one for Barton.

Bluefield was whistled for 19 fouls, Barton had 12.

The Rams step back into Mid-South Conference play on Saturday, hosting Shawnee State at 1 p.m.
