Coaching Philosophy
Coach John is a cooperative coach with commend tendencies. A growth mindset is the foundation of the team's approach to learning. Practices are upbeat with lots of repetitions. Practices implement game situations in team drills augmented by individual technical practices and feedback. Athletes will learn how to play and not just where to stand. 
 
Coaching Experience
Coach John has over 30 years of high-level coaching experience. His coaching credits include every level from 10 years as a club director to NCAA D I, II, III, NJCAA, NAIA, and a stint at USA Volleyball Education. 
 
Bluefield University Coaching Highlights
In 2024-25 Coach John starts his second season at the helm of Bluefield University Men's Volleyball. In his first season after successfully rebooting the paused men's volleyball program in 2023-24, Coach John led Bluefield to the third-best season in school history reaching the AAC postseason tournament. Under Coach John's tutelage, Bluefield was honored with one first-team all-conference award, and two second-team all-conference awards. 
 
Other Coaching Highlights
 Coach John has spent his career specializing in successfully creating teams or quickly recovering floundering programs. As a result, he has had many awards and accolades. In the last ten seasons he has accumulated three collegiate conference coach of the year awards while also defeating 16 nationally ranked opponents. His teams have been nationally ranked in the top 20 for three of the last ten seasons including #8 and those teams have ranked in the top 10 regionally 5 times. Coach John appears on four schools' all-time top five single-season lists. In his last three stops coach led each of his teams to the university's best season mark in the last twenty years while breaking two multi-year winless streaks. Over these seasons Coach John has mentored athletes to four All-American Awards and 23 All-Conference awards.
