About Mitchell Stadium

Bluefield College returned its football program to the gridiron in 2012 for its first varsity season in 71 years, bringing college football back to Mitchell Stadium.

Mitchell Stadium began construction in 1935 as part of the Works Progress Administration and was completed in 1936. It is part of the Bluefield City Park, which straddles the West Virginia-Virginia state line and also features the Bluefield City Courts, and Bowen Field, as well as a picnic area, basketball courts, a playground and hiking trails.

The stadium is steeped in history, having been home to many rivalry games over the years. It serves as the home football field for both Graham High School (Va.) and Bluefield High School (W. Va.), with the two schools competing against one another annually and alternating home/away. In the 1950s Virginia Tech played multiple games at Mitchell Stadium, including three-straight years against Marshall University (1951-53) and also against West Virginia Univeristy in 1953.

The stadium earns its name from City Manager Emory P. Mitchell, who held office for 14 years and worked to develop the city park. The stadium was dedicated in the fall of 1954, three years after Mitchell's passing.

In 2007, new stadium turf was installed thanks to the June Shott Foundation.

Recently, the stadium has also served as the home to the "Second Chance Rocks the Two Virginias" concerts.
