GAINESVILLE, Ga. – The Bluefield University women's soccer team fell to Brenau, 2-0, in an Appalachian Athletic Conference match Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore goalkeeper Autumn Matthews went to work early, stopping four shots in the game's first 20 minutes to keep the score knotted at 0-0. In the 22nd minute, junior forward Sara Cox recorded the Rams' (1-3) first chance of the afternoon with a shot on goal, but it was saved by the Tigers' (4-2) keeper.
Matthews added six more saves throughout the first half to keep the match scoreless heading into the final 45 minutes of play.
Brenau broke through in the 56th and 59th minutes to take a 2-0 lead early in the second half.
Sophomore Jamye Crawford put a shot on goal in the 60th minute, and sophomore midfielder Alex Wilder followed with another in the 89th minute, but the Rams were unable to convert as the game ended 2-0 in favor of the Tigers.
Matthews had a massive day in goal, setting a new career high with 22 saves—the most by a BU goalkeeper since at least the 2012 season. Cox, Crawford, and Wilder recorded the only three shots of the game for the Rams.
Bluefield returns to the pitch September 17, hosting Pikeville in a match slated for 4:00 p.m.
