BLUEFIELD, W.Va. – The Bluefield University women's soccer team was defeated by Pikeville, 8-1, in an Appalachian Athletic Conference match held at the East River Soccer Complex Wednesday evening.
The Bears (5-0-2, 3-0-1 AAC) got off to a fast start and never looked back. The Rams (1-4, 0-3) registered two shots in the opening frame by sophomore midfielder Moriah Mingo and senior forward Ashlyn Newman but trailed 5-0 at the halftime break.
In the 68th minute, Newman capitalized on a Pikeville deflection, lofting the ball just over the goalkeeper's head to score BU's lone goal of the day.
UPike tacked on three more goals in the latter stages of the second half to close out the win.
Newman's goal marked her second of the season, and she also logged two shots in the game. Mingo's first-half attempt was the only other shot for BU. Sophomore goalkeeper Autumn Matthews tallied 12 saves in the loss.
Bluefield will host Columbia International at the East River Soccer Complex on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
