Bluefield Sweeps Regent on Senior Night, Somes Joins Record Books

Bluefield, Va. – April 9, 2025

The Bluefield University Rams closed out their regular season with a dominant 3-0 sweep over Regent University, delivering a powerful performance on Senior Night and marking a historic milestone for one of their own.

Before the match, Bluefield honored seniors Patrick Lundblom and Kyle Pietrzak, as well as graduate students Colby Mutter and General Smith for their dedication, leadership, and impact on the Rams volleyball program. Each athlete received a warm ovation from teammates and supporters as they took the court one last time in the regular season.

The evening also included a special recognition for Benedict Somes, who surpassed 1,200 career assists, earning him a place in the Bluefield University record books as third all-time in career assists. Somes' consistency and court vision have made him a cornerstone of the Rams' offense, and tonight he added another 33 assists to his impressive total.

The Rams made quick work of the Royals, winning in straight sets: 25-16, 25-22, and 25-19.

Stat Highlights:

  • Kyle Pietrzak led the way with 11 kills, 5 aces, 5 blocks, and 11 digs, turning in a stellar all-around performance on his senior night.

  • Dakarai Williams added 8 kills, while General Smith chipped in 5 kills and 3 blocks.

  • Benedict Somes paced the offense with 33 assists, continuing his elite playmaking.

  • Colby Mutter added a strong defensive showing with 10 digs.

  • Bluefield outhit Regent with a team hitting percentage of .267 to the Royals' .061, and also led in kills (38-26), assists (35-26), and blocks (7-5).

With the win, Bluefield improves to 14-10 overall and 8-5 in conference play, riding into the postseason with momentum and confidence.

Tonight wasn't just a match—it was a celebration of commitment, excellence, and legacy.
