Kingsport, Tenn. — Bluefield University men's volleyball made history Thursday night, earning a thrilling 3-2 victory over Talladega College to advance to the semifinals for the first time in program history. The Rams took the match by set scores of 25-20, 22-25, 25-22, 21-25, and 21-19, improving their record to 15-10.
It was a true team effort for Bluefield, led by Mason Lloyd, who delivered a match-high 23 kills along with 10 digs and 3 total blocks. Kyle Pietrzak turned in a clutch performance, racking up 14 kills, 7 service aces, and 9 digs, while Dakari Williams added 15 kills of his own.
Benedict Somes set the tone with a game-high 60 assists, orchestrating the offense throughout the marathon match. Colby Mutter led the defensive charge with 18 digs, and General Smith contributed 8 kills and a key block in the middle.
After splitting the first four sets, the Rams and Tornadoes went toe-to-toe in a nail-biting fifth set. Tied at 19-19, Bluefield closed it out with back-to-back points, punching their ticket to the semifinals in dramatic fashion.
"I am proud of the guys. They found a way to win against a very determined opponent," said head coach Kevin John. "Respect to a very tough Talladega squad."
The victory marks a new milestone for the program, as the Rams will now compete in the semifinal round for the first time in school history.
The Rams will face St. Thomas Univeristy today at 1pm in the semifinal round of the tournament.
