Bluefield, VA – April 5, 2025 — On a beautiful and sunny afternoon at Bowen Field, Bluefield University celebrated a momentous occasion as it honored its first-ever team to be inducted into the Bluefield University Hall of Fame: the 2009 Bluefield College Baseball team.
Surrounded by alumni, students, and community members, the ceremony recognized the historic achievements of a team that brought national glory to Bluefield. The 2009 Rams, under the leadership of Head Coach Mike White, claimed the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) World Series Championship—a first in program history.
The championship, held from May 20–23, 2009, at Prasco Park and Legacy Field in Mason, Ohio, saw the Rams, ranked #4, battle their way through the tournament and ultimately defeat top-seeded Malone University 5–3 in a thrilling title game.
That championship season was marked not just by the title but by dominant performances across the board. The Rams finished the year with an impressive 39-14 overall record and an 18-9 conference mark. They showcased an elite pitching staff, finishing 7th nationally in Earned Runs Allowed (3.132) and 12th in ERA (3.950). Offensively, the team boasted a .341 batting average, a .528 slugging percentage, and 357 RBIs. Their 23 triples ranked them 11th in the country, and they averaged 0.434 triples per game—14th nationally.
Defensively, the team maintained a solid .961 fielding percentage, adding to their all-around dominance.
Individual standout performances were key to their success. Devin Good ranked 7th nationally with 35 stolen bases and appeared among national leaders in multiple categories. Tony Singleton added speed and power with 6 triples, placing him 15th in the nation.
Though not all players could attend yesterday's celebration, several members of the 2009 team made the trip back to Bowen Field for this special moment: Matt Cox, Jonathan Haggee, Zach Holderfield, Jeremiah McMillian, Evan Pelot, Andrew Weaver, and Travis Weaver. Each received recognition alongside their teammates who could not be present but were celebrated nonetheless for their lasting impact on Bluefield's baseball legacy.
