Bluefield Rams Dominate at Rio Grande Invitational with Back-to-Back Sweeps

In day two of the Rio Grande Invitational, the Rams entered after their win last night and swept the day, defeating Park Gilbert University first 3-0 and then finishing the day with another 3-0 victory over Aquinas College.

In a dominant display of volleyball prowess, the Bluefield University Rams clinched a comprehensive victory over Park-Gilbert at the Rio Grande Invitational Tournament to start the day. 

From the onset, the Rams set a high tempo, narrowly edging Park-Gilbert 30-28 in a tightly contested first set. They maintained their momentum to win the second set 25-23 and finished strong with a dominant 25-13 win in the third set. 

Kyle Pietrzak led  Bluefield scoring with 14 kills, followed by Mason Lloyd and Dakari Williams, who each contributed 7 kills. On the defensive front, General Smith was a force, amassing 4.0 blocks, while Williams also shone with a match-high 4 aces. The team's strategic setups were orchestrated expertly by Waynne Palma and Nathaniel Gooden, who both distributed 11 assists each.

Despite Park-Gilbert's efforts, including 3 aces from Azzlyn Potts and 19 assists from Trevor Ayala, they could not withstand the Rams' robust challenge, falling to 0-5 for the season. The Rams' defense was equally aggressive, with Cesar Bitanga leading with 11 digs.

Aquinas College

The Rams finished the night and the tournament with a clean sweep against Aquinas (MI) with a resounding 3-0 victory. 

From the outset, the Rams established a lead that they would never relinquish. In the first set, Bluefield gained the upper hand with a tight 25-21 win. They continued their dominance into the second set with a 25-19 victory, further dampening the spirits of the Aquinas team. The third set saw the Rams at their best, cruising to a 25-13 triumph to seal the match decisively.

Dakari Williams led the attack with a remarkable 15 kills, closely followed by Mason Lloyd, who added 11 kills to the scoreboard. Kyle Pietrzak also contributed significantly with 6 kills. On the defensive front, Richard Cisneros and Mason Lloyd each stopped their opponents with 2.0 blocks, while General Smith added another block to the team's tally.

Service was another area where the Rams excelled. Benedict Somes served up 2 crucial aces, a feat matched by Kyle Pietrzak, with Dakari Williams and Jonathon Rudder each chipping in one more to bolster the team's performance. Furthermore, Somes commanded the game with 33 assists, proving essential in setting up plays and facilitating his team's offensive efforts.

The Rams, now 3-2, will look ahead to play Rio Grande at home on Tuesday at 7 p.m., eager to capitalize on their home-court advantage and redeem themselves against Rio.
