Bluefield Clipped Late in Loss to Spartanburg Methodist

BLUEFIELD, W.Va. – The Bluefield University men's soccer team was edged 2-1 by Spartanburg Methodist on Saturday afternoon at the East River Complex in Appalachian Athletic Conference play.

With the result, the Rams fall to 1-9-1 overall and 0-6-1 in AAC competition.

Spartanburg Methodist struck first in the 15th minute, but Bluefield answered quickly just over a minute later when Sebastian Armijos scored off an assist from Lasamson Fernander to even the match at 1-1. The Rams kept the pressure on throughout a physical first half that saw multiple yellow cards issued on both sides.

Bluefield's defense held firm through much of the second half, led by consistent efforts from Abdiel Donato, Landon Puckett, and Nolvin Vigil. Goalkeeper Canaan Newman made four saves while facing 18 total shots, keeping the Rams within striking distance until the final moments.

The visitors broke the tie with a late goal in the 85th minute to secure the win. Bluefield finished with two total shots on the day, one on target.

The Rams will return to AAC play Saturday, Oct. 11, traveling to Milligan University for a 3:00 p.m. kickoff.
