Bluefield Sweeps Montreat, Outlasts Truett McConnell in Weekend Road Trip

CLEVELAND, Ga. – The Bluefield University volleyball team continued its strong stretch of Appalachian Athletic Conference play over the weekend, earning a sweep at Montreat on Friday before edging Truett McConnell in a five-set battle Saturday.

With the two victories, the Rams improved to 10-9 overall and 6-9 in AAC play.

Game One: Bluefield 3, Montreat 0 (25-21, 25-23, 25-20)
The Rams opened the weekend with a dominant sweep of Montreat. BU hit .267 as a team and controlled the pace throughout, holding the Cavaliers under .120 hitting in all three sets. Morgan Wigg and Ella Gawellek led the attack with 11 kills each, while freshman Camille Gonzalez Rivera turned in one of her best outings of the year with eight kills on a .636 hitting percentage. Setter Izabella Lechuga totaled 14 assists, and Katie Voss added 11. Defensively, Eledy Torres anchored the back row with 14 digs and four service aces as Bluefield closed out the match with steady play down the stretch in each set.

Game Two: Bluefield 3, Truett McConnell 2 (25-27, 18-25, 25-22, 25-19, 15-11)
Saturday's match in Cleveland, Ga., was a thriller, as the Rams rallied from two sets down to secure a five-set win over the Bears. Chesed Russell and Gawellek powered the comeback, finishing with 14 kills apiece, while Wigg contributed nine kills and a match-high seven blocks. Lechuga distributed the offense with 38 assists, and Torres again led the defensive charge with 26 digs and five service aces. BU hit .233 in the fourth set to force a decisive fifth, then rode early momentum and tough serving to claim the comeback victory, 15-11.

Over the weekend, Gawellek totaled 25 kills across both matches, Wigg added 20 kills and 10 total blocks, and Torres posted 40 digs with nine aces. The two wins marked the Rams' third and fourth consecutive victories.

Bluefield returns home October 28 to host Carolina University in non-conference play at 6:30 p.m. inside the Dome Gymnasium.
