Bluefield Concludes Home Weekend Versus Columbia International and Spartanburg Methodist

BLUEFIELD, Va. – The Bluefield University volleyball team hosted a pair of Appalachian Athletic Conference matches inside The Dome this weekend, facing Columbia International on Friday evening and Spartanburg Methodist on Saturday morning.

With the weekend results, Bluefield moves to 7-9 overall and 3-9 in AAC play.

Game One – Columbia International 3, Bluefield 0 (25–14, 25–9, 25–17)
BU opened the weekend against one of the AAC's top teams in Columbia International. The Rams battled early in the opening frame, trading points through the first 10 rallies before the visiting Rams pulled away late behind efficient hitting. Despite falling in the first two sets, Bluefield found rhythm in the third behind the efforts of Morgan Wigg and Rachel Sasson, but CIU's consistent net play closed out the match in three sets.

Wigg led BU with eight kills, while Sasson followed with five. Eledy Torres anchored the defense with 17 digs, and Kylee Sturgill added eight from the back row. Setter Izabella Lechuga tallied nine assists, while Katie Voss chipped in five assists and two service aces.

Game Two – Spartanburg Methodist 3, Bluefield 0 (25–10, 28–26, 25–23)
The Rams returned to the court Saturday morning for a tight three-set battle against Spartanburg Methodist. After a difficult first set, Bluefield responded with one of its most competitive stretches of the season. The Rams traded leads 13 times in the second set and forced extra points before falling narrowly, 28–26. The third set saw more back-and-forth play, with BU holding a late lead before the Pioneers edged ahead to take the frame 25–23.

Bluefield hit .214 in the final set, led by Ella Gawellek's seven kills and .190 attack percentage. Chesed Russell and Rachel Sasson each added seven kills, while Morgan Wigg contributed five and three total blocks. Abbey Boehm posted six kills on .235 hitting, and setter Izabella Lechuga distributed 17 assists with nine digs. Eledy Torres and Sienna Vitelli each tallied 13 digs to lead the back row, with Vitelli also serving a pair of aces.

The Rams will return to action October 21 hosting Milligan University inside The Dome Gymnasium. First serve is set for 6:30 p.m.
