Box Score Bluefield, WV — The Bluefield Rams achieved their first victory of the season in dramatic fashion, scoring a decisive goal with just 14 seconds remaining, coupled with an impenetrable defensive display.
In their home opener on Wednesday night, the Rams faced Emory & Henry University, a team they had previously lost to 3-0 earlier in the spring. Head Coach
Gabriel Blakman acknowledged the challenge ahead: "We knew coming in we had to battle. E & H is a tough opponent and had played very well in the past." The evening was marked by intense heat and high anticipation as Bluefield sought to secure their inaugural win.
It was a night of relentless back-and-forth action as the clash between Bluefield and Emory & Henry unfolded. From the opening whistle, both teams showcased their defensive prowess, making it clear that goals would not come easily. Emory & Henry unleashed six shots in the first period, but none found the back of the net, thanks to stellar performances from Bluefield's Senior defender
Adam Gymnander and Freshman goalie
Justus Repschlaeger. On the other end, Bluefield's attack, featuring
Unai Gonzalez,
Louis Märker, and
Edwin Cruz, faced an equally formidable Emory & Henry defense. As the first period drew to a close, the scoreboard remained locked in a scoreless tie.
The second period brought a shift in momentum. Bluefield's defense tightened its grip, restricting Emory & Henry's offensive opportunities, while their own attack began to penetrate Emory & Henry's defense. Despite a barrage of attempts from Bluefield, the score remained deadlocked as the clock ticked down.
With just 14 seconds left on the clock, the game took a dramatic turn. An Emory & Henry foul awarded Bluefield a free kick.
Enrique Santamaria-Benito stepped up for the Rams, only to have the official's whistle interrupt his initial attempt. The tension was palpable as fans leaped to their feet, eagerly awaiting the decisive moment. Amidst the chaos, Enrique remained composed, drawing confidence from his teammate
Unai Gonzalez's words: "It's yours, trust in yourself."
And trust he did. With the clock winding down, Enrique delivered a masterful strike that soared past the Emory & Henry defense and into the net. The crowd erupted as Bluefield secured a thrilling 1-0 victory with only seconds to spare. This last-minute goal not only clinched the win but also highlighted the Rams' resilience and poise under pressure.
Coach Blakman shared his thoughts after the game: "The guys have worked very hard during pre-season, and they fought very hard for this win. They earned it and they deserved it. I am very happy for the team and we will keep working hard to get more wins."
Bluefield's next challenge will be at Virginia Peninsula Community College on Friday, August 30th, at 6 p.m.
