COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Bluefield University men's soccer team fell to Columbia International University, 7-0, Saturday afternoon at Sessions Field in an Appalachian Athletic Conference matchup.
The Rams battled through a competitive opening half before CIU broke through late. Senior goalkeeper Canaan Newman made several early saves, including a stop in the 33'. CIU continued to pressure the Bluefield defense, hitting the post in the 41'.
The BU defense held until the 45', when CIU took a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.
CIU added to its advantage early in the second half to make the score 3-0 in favor of the home Rams.
Bluefield continued to battle, with freshman midfielder Leo Bascope putting a shot on goal early in the second half and senior midfiedler Landon Murnahan forcing a save from CIU goalkeeper in the 77th minute.
Newman finished with four saves for Bluefield, while the Rams were limited to five shots, including two on goal. CIU finished with 27 shots and 14 corner kicks.
Bluefield returns home Wednesday to host Milligan at the East River Soccer Complex. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m.
