Life topples men's volleyball

Box Score BLUEFIELD – The Life University Eagles flew into the Dome Gymnasium, Friday evening, and handed the Bluefield University Rams a 3-1 loss in Appalachian Athletic Conference men's volleyball action.
INSIDE THE MATCH
  • The first set saw Life open an early three-point lead and Bluefield draw even at five. LU responded with four straight points to pull away. BU got to within a point twice on Kyle Pietrzak kills midway through the opening set before tying at 15 and taking a 17-15 lead forcing Life to call its first time out. A service ace by Colby Mutter put the Rams ahead 22-18 and the Eagles used their final time out of the set. The Rams took set one 25-21.
  • In the second set the teams battled each point until a kill by Noah Clements gave Bluefield a 12-9 lead. Life battled back to tie at 13. During the middle portion of the set the teams exchanged the lead. The Rams rallied and after ties at 21 and 22, took a 23-22 lead at which time the Eagles used a time out. The teams continued to battle for each point. Life won set two 27-25 to even that match at a game apiece.
  • BU ran out to an early four-point lead in the third set. Four was the largest lead by either team at that time in the match. The Rams took the biggest lead of the night at 18-13 when the Eagles used a time out. The Eagles then went on a 6-1 run to tie the set at 19. Life claimed the third set 25-23 to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
  • Life came out strong in the fourth set and opened a 5-1 lead, forcing Bluefield to take a time out. The Eagles continued and went up 9-2 and the Rams used their last time out of the set. The Eagles controlled the set and went on for a 25-xx win to take the match.

  • Pietrzak finished with 21 kills, seven digs, and five blocks.
  • Benedict Somes had 41 assists, seven digs, and a pair of blocks.
  • Clements had 11 digs and 10 kills.
  • Colby Mutter collected 18 digs.
