Rams Fall in Thrilling Five-Set Battle Against Union Bulldogs

Barbourville, KY – In an unexpected turn of events, the Rams faced off against the Union Bulldogs on Wednesday night after inclement weather forced a venue change from their home court. What ensued was a nail-biting contest that showcased effort and skill, but ultimately, the Rams came up just short, losing the match in five sets.

The atmosphere at Union College was electric as both teams exchanged blows in a hard-fought battle. Head Coach Buddy Gallemore noted, "When we play Union, it is always a close match, no matter what the records are." The Rams displayed impressive offensive firepower, led by Liangelys Santana, who notched 26 kills. Joslyn Evans and Cylie-Ann Wong also made significant contributions, adding 21 and 17 kills, respectively.

Despite the fierce attack, the match was characterized by momentum swings that kept fans on the edge of their seats. The Rams exhibited strong defensive efforts, particularly from Georgia Lewis, who recorded 27 digs, and Santana, who added 26 of her own. Evans anchored the front line with a standout performance at the net, amassing 7 blocks, supported by Madison Rodabaugh and Abbey Boehm, who each contributed 2 blocks.

Nayerly Jimenez orchestrated the offense effectively with 67 assists, setting up her teammates for scoring opportunities and keeping the Bulldogs on their toes. Gallemore reflected on the match's intensity, saying, "We came out playing well, executed our game plan, and won the first set rather easily. But we knew they wouldn't just roll over, and they came back in the second and third sets and took it straight to us. But the ladies showed a lot of resiliency and won the fourth."

In the decisive fifth set, however, the Rams came up just short. "In the fifth, they made a few more plays than we did, and we came up short. But we don't have time to dwell on the loss with Brenau coming in here on Friday," Gallemore added, emphasizing the team's focus on the upcoming match.

Game Leaders:

As for the recent challenges faced by the team, Gallemore praised the character and camaraderie displayed by the players. "It says a lot about the ladies' character and the culture of the program with how they handled it. They could have decided to go home when the rest of the students were dismissed, but they chose not to leave. They took care of each other. When one dorm got power back and the other didn't, players moved in with each other to have power."

The Rams want to extend their gratitude to Bluefield State University and their volleyball program for allowing them to practice at their gym when they couldn't use the dome. They also expressed appreciation for the cafeteria staff for their efforts in keeping the student-athletes fed. "Of course, we couldn't even think about playing without the leadership of the University, particularly Athletic Director Corey Mullins and President Steve Peterson," Gallemore said.

Lastly, the team sends thoughts and prayers to those affected by the storm, particularly Montreat College and their volleyball program. The Rams are ready to regroup and take on Brenau University on Friday at 6:30 PM on their home court.
