BLUEFIELD – Bluefield University softball celebrated Senior Day with a doubleheader win over Bluefield State University, Friday afternoon at Graham Rec Park. The Rams defeated the Big Blue 8-0 in five innings in the opener and took an exciting come-from-behind 11-9 win in the nightcap.
GAME ONE
BLUEFIELD 8, BLUEFIELD STATE 0
The Rams scored one in the first on an RBI double by
Macy Martin. BU added another run in the second on
Jenna Atwell's RBI single. The Rams plated a pair of runs in the third on single by Martin, and a sacrifice fly by
MacKenzie Franklin. Bluefield exploded for four runs in the top of the fifth, the big hit a two-run double by
Gianna Sloan-Lebron. The Rams retired the Big Blue in the bottom of the inning to end the game after five innings according to the run rule.
Martin led Bluefield going 3-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Sloan-Lebron,
Kristina Sanchez, and
Madison Blankenship each had a pair of hits and Sloan-Lebron knocked in two runs.
Hallie Cox was stellar in the circle, pitching a complete game three hitter with six strikeouts.
GAME TWO
BLUEFIELD 11, BLUEFIELD STATE 9
BU overcame a 4-0 deficit to defeat BSU 11-9 in game two of the Battle of the Bluefields. State scored two in the first and one in the second and fourth to go ahead 4-0. BU put a six on the board in the bottom of the fourth to take the lead. Sloan-Lebron and
Alexis McDuffie each had run-scoring singles, and
Jenna Atwell had a bases loaded, bases clearing double. The Rams added three more in the fifth, two on McDuffie's double.
State rallied for four in the sixth to get to within a run of the lead at 9-8. Bluefield pushed across two in the bottom of the sixth to move ahead 11-8. The Big Blue scored one in the top of the seventh and had the tying run at the plate when the final out was recorded.
McDuffie led Bluefield, going 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Franklin was 2-for-3 and Atwell knocked in four runs. Cox, in relief, got the win in the circle. She pitched the final four innings and picked up three strikeouts.
The Rams finished the season with a 6-32 record.
