Rams end skid, get first AAC win

BLUEFIELD – Bluefield University baseball picked up its first AAC win of the season with a 2-1 win over the Montreat College Cavaliers in game two of Saturday's doubleheader at Bowen Field to wrap up a three-game series between the two teams. The win snapped a four-game skid and improved the Rams record to 6-5 overall, 1-4 in the AAC.
The series began Thursday night and the Cavaliers took a 10-9 win in a wild game. Montreat scored five in the first, but Bluefield battled back and with four runs in the fourth  tied the game. BU took a 7-6 lead in the fifth only to see Montreat knot the game at seven in the seventh. The Cavaliers scored three in the eighth to go up 10-7. The Rams rallied and pushed two across in the bottom of the ninth but came up a run short.
David Meech, Johnny Medina, and Dylan Cutler were each 3-for-5 with a run batted in. Aiden Brown was 2-for-3, and Brady Joslyn homered.
Saturday's opening game saw Montreat again jump out to a large lead, scoring five runs in the third inning on their way to a 6-1 win. Bluefield's lone run came in the sixth on Kevin Torres' RBI single. Culter was 3-for-4, and Joslyn 2-for-4.
The Rams avoided the sweep with a 2-1 win in game two of Saturday's twinbill. BU went up 1-0 in the third on an RBI double by Reece Genter. Montreat tied in the fourth and the Rams reook the lead on Joslyn's ground out in the sixth. Montreat appeared to take the lead in the top of the seventh when Caleb Abshire powered the ball over the left field wall for an apparent home run. The homer was nullified as Abshire did not touch first base and was called out.
Ryan Voss picked up the win for the Rams as he pitched six-and-a-third innings, allowed four hits and struck out four. Noah Burtner earned the save as he worked the final two-thirds of an inning and fanned one batter.
Cutler and Genter were both 2-for-3 and Cutler drove in a run.
The Rams are back in action Tuesday, Feb. 28 as they host WVU Tech in a single nine-inning game at Bowen Field.
