Football falls in Homecoming shootout

BLUEFIELD – Homecoming 2023 was a high-scoring football game as the University of Pikeville Bears out-slugged the Bluefield University Rams 51-42, Saturday night at Mitchell Stadium.
INSIDE THE GAME
  • UPike took the opening kick and drove75 yards in nine plays to take a 7-0 lead. The Rams played catch-up the rest of the night.
  • BU tied at seven on a pass play from Nathan Herstich to George Adjei covering nine yards. Riley Stubbs booted the PAT.
  • After a Pikeville score the Rams drew even at 14 when Herstich carried itin from two yards out.
  • Jewels Gray's 27-yard reception from Herstich tied the game at 21 going into halftime.
  • A pair of Pikeville scores, a touchdown and a field goal, gave the Bears a 30-21 advantage.
  • Dakii Chandler was on the receiving end of a 21-yard pass from Herstich to make it a two-point game, 30-28.
  • Pikeville added two touchdowns to move ahead 44-28 with just under five minutes left in the game.
  • Bluefield made it a one-score game on a three-yard Herstich keeper and a two-point conversion pass to Gray.
  • The Bears went back ahead by two-scores with a pick-six. The Rams scored their final points with three ticks on the clock on a 21-yard Herstich pass to Adjei to make the final 51-42.
LEADERS
  • Herstich accounted for six touchdowns, four passing and two rushing. He completed 25-of-47 passes for 406 yards.
  • Gray caught four passes for 115 yards and a score.
  • Adjei had eight receptions for 108 yards and two touchdowns.
  • Quincy Robinson led the defense with 11 tackles and three tackles-for-loss.
