Rams joust Knights

BLUEFIELD – Bluefield University football opened Appalachian Athletic Conference play with a 49-14 win over St. Andrews University, Saturday night. The win snapped a two-game skid which saw BU fall to two teams ranked in the top 11 of the NAIA. The Rams' Elijah Padget and Isaiah Bandy set AAC records with their performances.
INSIDE THE GAME
  • The Rams took the opening kickoff and drove 75 yards mostly on the legs of Cortarius Gilmore. Gilmore capped the 10-play drive with a three-yard touchdown run. Isaiah Bandy booted the extra point.
  • BU went ahead 14-0 on a 40-yard pass play from Nathan Herstich to George Adjei. Bandy's extra point was good.
  • SAU scored on a 37-yard run but missed the extra point and BU led 14-6 at the end of the first quarter.
  • Herstich connected with Thomas Lee on a 31-yard pass for a score and Bandy's kick was true to make it 21-6.
  • Gilmore got his second score of the game on a two yard run and Bandy's kick was good to push the score 28-6 which was the halftime score.
  • Bluefield outscored St. Andrews 21-8 in the second half.
  • Lee had a three-yard touchdown reception and Cadence Lampp scored on a one-yard run with Bandy kicking both extra points.
  • The Rams' final score came with 12:31 left in the game on a 26-yard interception return by Padgett with Bandy kicking his seventh PAT of the contest.
LEADERS
  • Padgett set AAC single game records with three sacks and four tackles-for-loss. Padgett finished the game with seven tackles and an interception.
  • Bandy set an AAC single game record with seven points after touchdown kicks.
  • Gilmore carried 21 times for a season high 150 yards and two touchdowns.
  • Lampp rushed eight times for 62 yards and a score.
  • Lee caught three passes for 56 yards and a pair of scores.
  • Jewels Gray led the Rams with four catches.
  • Herstich completed 12-of-27 passes for 169 yards and three touchdowns.
  • Leyton Fowler led Bluefield with 11 tackles.

  • The Rams take on Point University in an AAC contest next Saturday, Oct. 6 in Valley, Alabama.
