Bears scratch past Rams in opener

    BLUEFIELD - The University of Pikeville Bears scored a goal in the 50th minute to scratch its way past the Bluefield University Rams 1-0, Wednesday afternoon in the Rams' season opening game at the East River Soccer Complex.
    The game, originally scheduled to be played at UPike, was moved to East River due to COVID precautions on the Kentucky university's campus. 
    Wednesday's match was hampered by the weather. The scoreless match was halted with 27 minutes remaining in the first half due to lightning. The delay wasss two hours twenty minutes. Once the teams returned to the pitch they were able to complete the first half. After a five-minute break for halftime, UPike's Kylie Golihue scored the match's only goal in the 50th minute of play. An injury to a BU player called for another stoppage of play for nearly 30 minutes. Play resumed and after eight minutes of game time the game was ended with just over 16 minutes remaining due to lightning in the area.
    BU's Madison Price had four saves ias goalkeeper. Pikeville out-shot the Rams 16-4.
    Bluefield returns to action Tuesday at Shawnee State (Ohio).
