Eagles slip past Rams with late surge

BLUEFIELD – Reinhardt University came from behind in game two of Friday's doubleheader at Graham Rec Park to defeat BC Softball 6-4.
The Eagles took the lead with single runs in the second and fifth inning. The Rams responded in the bottom of the fifth. Leadoff back-to-back errors put Macy Martin and Hannah Taylor base. Kelsey Topliff was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Martin came home on a fielder's choice and Topliff later scored on a ground out. Later in the frame Kristina Sanchez fouled off a pitch that struck her in the face. After receiving attention from the BC training staff, Sanchez stepped back into the box and on the first pitch hit a towering two-run home run to left field to put Bluefield ahead 4-2.
The Rams' lead was short-lived as Reinhardt scored four times in the top of the sixth to retake the lead and gain the victory.
Taylor Nunn started in the circle for Bluefield and worked the first five innings. Jocilyn Thompson, the game one winner, entered in the fifth. She did not finish the inning as Nunn returned to the circle to get the Rams out of the inning. Thompson suffered the loss.
Santana and Sanchez both had a pair of hits for BC. Santana knocked in one run, and Sanchez drove home two with her homer.
"We had our chances but couldn't find a way to finish," said Rams head coach Sam White. "Kris has been our rock all year. She was a cowgirl after taking that foul ball. That hit was special. Nunn kept us in the game. She continues to impress as the season goes along."
