Golden Tigers scratch past Rams

BLUEFIELD – Brenau University held off the Bluefield College Rams in the opening game of Tuesday's AAC doubleheader 9-8 at Graham Rec Park.
The Golden Tigers opened a 3-0 lead, scoring once in the second and two times in the third. The Rams responded and took the lead with six in the bottom of the third.
Back-to-back singles by Claudia Santana and Kristina Sanchez put runners on the corners. Laken Sparks singled to bring home Santana and move Sanchez to third. Lexi Harmon singled to score Sanchez and Macy Martin walked to load the bases. After an out Taylyn Strange hit a 1-1 pitch over the fence in left for a grand slam home run, her first longball of the season. At the end of three BC led 6-3.
Brenau drew even in the fourth with three runs and added three more in the fifth to forge ahead 9-6. The Rams fought back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh, but it was not enough as the Golden Tigers took a 9-8 win.
Sanchez had three hits for the Rams while Harmon and Jocilyn Thompson each had two. Strange finished with four RBIs and Sparks two.
Thompson took the loss in the circle. She worked 3 2/3 innings in relief of starter Harmon. Thompson gave up three runs on two hits and struck out five.
