Harmon's homer lifts Rams over CIU in opener

BLUEFIELD – Senior Day for Bluefield College Softball saw the Rams defeat Columbia International University 5-2 in the first of two games Monday afternoon at Graham Rec Park.
BC took a 1-0 lead in the second. Taylyn Strange got aboard on an infield single, Chloe Hicks and Gabrielle Melick each had successful sacrifice bunts that moved Strange to third. Strange came home on an error on a batted ball by Macy Martin.
CIU knotted the game in the third and took a 2-1 lead in the fourth. In the fifth Megan Grose singled to right and Claudia Santana doubled to center putting runners on second and third. Kristina Sanchez singled to bring home Grose to tie the game. Lexi Harmon later hit a 2-0 pitch over the fence in left to bring home three runs and give the BC Rams a 5-2 lead over the CIU Rams.
Bluefield maintained the lead the final two innings and claimed the game one victory.
Jocilyn Thompson pitched a complete game to get the win. She struck out four. At the plate Santana, Sanchez, Martin and Grose were all 2-for-3. Martin and Sanchez each had an RBI.
BC head coach Sam White said, 'It was a great win for our seniors. Gaby and Leci gave strong performances on both offense and defense. JT had another strong performance in the circle. I can't say enough about how Sanchez solidified our defense."
Prior to the game BC Softball seniors were honored for their work and dedication to the program. Megan Grose, Lexi Harmon, Gabrielle Melick, Laken Sparks, and Taylyn Strange were joined on the field by their families and received gifts from Bluefield College.
