Rams fall to Rams in game two

BLUEFIELD – The Columbia International University Rams dampened Bluefield College Rams spirits on Senior Day as CIU took a 14-6 win in game two of Monday's doubleheader at Graham Rec Park.
Things started well for BC who took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Kristina Sanchez doubled and Laken Sparks doubled her home with the game's first run. CIU responded in a big manner with nine runs in the second and one in the third to take a 10-1 lead.
Bluefield chipped away, scoring two in the third. Claudia Santana singled and Sanchez each singled, and   and Sparks followed with another double to score Santana and move Sanchez to third. Sanchez came home on Lexi Harmon's sacrifice fly to right.
BC scored two more in the fourth. Back-to-back CIU errors put Megan Grose and Santana on base. Grose was later retired on a fielder's choice. Santana scored on a Chloe Hicks single and Sanhez, who got aboard on a fielder's choice, scored on a single by Taylyn Strange.
Bluefield's final run came in the fifth when Lauryn Bailey singled and later crossed home on a ground out.
CIU meanwhile continued to score and built its lead to 12-6 after five innings. The CIU Rams added two more runs in the top of the sixth, and when the BC Rams did not score in the bottom of the inning, the game ended due to the eight-run mercy rule.
The teams combined for 38 total hits, 25 by CIU and 13 by Bluefield. Sanchez and Martin were both 3-for-for. Sparks was 2-for-2, and Strange 2-for-4.
Taylor Nunn, BC's starting pitcher, suffered the loss in one-and-one-third innings of work. Madison Koonce pitched the final four-and-two-third innings.
"The offense came out again, but we had an off game defensively," said Bluefield head coach Sam White. "Too many mistakes doomed us in this one Koonce is giving us everything she has. I'm very proud of how she kept pushing."
The Rams, who have qualified for the AAC Tournament, host Brenau, Tuesday at 1 p.m. in the final home contests of the season.
