Rams walk it off

BLUEFIELD – Bluefield College's baseball team honored its seniors with a come-from-behind 12-11 walk off win over the Truett McConnell Bears, Saturday afternoon at Bowen Field.
Things were rocky for the Rams in the early on as TMU scored seven runs in the first inning on only two hits and helped by a pair of BC errors. Bluefield responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. Nate Cobb doubled, and Ozzie Millet tripled him home. Clay Wisner brought Millet home with a single.
Truett McConnell added three more runs to go ahead 10-2 in the second inning. The Rams began chipping away at the Bears' lead in the third. Jeremie Garcia singled, then Cobb and Millet both drew walks to load the bases. Wisner lifted a sacrifice fly to center that scored Cobb, and Taylor Meaux followed with a three-run home run over the wall in right that made it 10-6.
The Bears scored one in the seventh to make it 11-6 and the Rams, in the bottom of the inning, continued to chip away at the lead. Wisner doubled to open the inning, Andreas Holtzer drew a one out walk, and David Meech singled to score Wisner. George Curbelo singled to bring home Holtzer, and Meech scored on a ground out.
Down a run, 11-10 headed to the bottom of the ninth, Bluefield donned its rally caps one final time. Meech connected for a one-out double to right and Curbelo singled Meech home to knot the game at 11. Max Aristy entered as a runner for Curbelo and moved to second when Elianel Mejia was hit by a pitch. Garcia then singled to center, scoring Aristy with the game-winning run. The exuberant Rams charged the field and congratulated Aristy at home plate and Garcia at first base as the comeback was complete.
Curbelo and Meaux were both 3-for-5 with two RBIs each. Garcia, Wisner, and Meaux each had a pair of hits. Meaux knocked in three runs, Wisner two. Bluefield out-hit Truett McConnell 14-11.
Justin Coleman worked the eighth and ninth innings to gain the win for Bluefield. Coleman did not allow a hit and struck out two. Ben Coffman started for BC and pitched one-and-one-third innings. Tyler Lowrey pitched five-and-two-third innings, allowed one run and struck out three.
After the game Bluefield head coach Mike White said, "When somebody jumps out on you that early, that big, there's a lot of baseball left to be played. Just go out and see if our pitching staff can go out and throw up some zeroes for us, and offensively, that's a lot of baseball. Peck a run or two here and there, and the next thing you know, you'll be right back in it. I didn't think it was going to happen, but doggone if it didn't."
Prior to the game Bluefield College recognized seniors Spencer Ambrose, Joseph Cardona, Justin Coleman, Elijah Ervin, Steven Estep, Kody Gardere, Aaron Hash, Andreas Holtzer, Elianel Mejia, and Ozzie Millet.
The Rams will host West Virginia University Tech in a non-conference game Tuesday at 2 p.m.
