Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

Rams top Thomas More on Senior Day

BLUEFIELD – Men's volleyball capped Saturday's tri-math at the Dome with a xxx-set Mid-South Conference win over Thomas More University.
The opening set was fast-paced and hard hitting from the outset as both teams held the lead in the early going. A kill by Alberto Chiaparini gave the Rams a three-point lead, and a Thomas More net violation made it a four-point advantage. Another Chiaparini kill pushed BC's lead to five. Down 15-9, the visiting Saints called tune. The Rams maintained the lead the remainder of the set and won 25-15, closing on a block by Tony Martin.
The Rams took control of set two early and built a five-point lead. The furious pace continued and the Rams maintained their lead until late in the set. Thomas More got to within one at 19-18 and tied things at 19. The Rams scored two straight to go up 21-19. TMU again tied the score, this time at 22 and took its first lead since early in the match at 23-22. Chiaparini's kill drew the Rams even at 23, and another kill made it 24-23 and a third straight Chiaparini kill won the set for Bluefield, 25-23.
Kills by JoVeaun Banks, Leonel Fernandez and Jariel Diaz staked Bluefield College to an early lead in the third set. Thomas More fought back and took a 9-8 lead. The teams battled and exchanged the lead before the Saints went ahead by two, 15-13. The Rams charged and retook the lead 20-18 only to see the visitors tie, and then go back in front 21-20. Chiaparini's 18th kill gave Bluefield a 25-24 lead. TMU responded with consecutive points to lead 26-25. Chiaparini's ace put BC on top 29-28 and the Rams won 30-28.
"It was a huge day for us. We went 6-0. Straight sets. Three sets in the first match, three in the second and sometimes we had to compete a little more than others in order to get it done and I am just proud of them," said Rams head coach Alfonso Alvarez. "I've been saying for a while that we are getting there, and in practice we are seeing it. So that transfer, if you will, all that stuff we have been working on in practice transferred to the game. It was really a great day for us."
Prior to the match Bluefield College honored its lone senior on the men's volleyball team, Chiaparini. Chiaparini is a former Mid-South Conference Player of the Year (2019) and All-Conference First Team player.
"Alberto Chiaparini is a special young man, not just a special volleyball player, but a special guy in general. He's a guy that we are going to miss tremendously. It's going to be really hard to replace that kind of talent and we are hoping that we can keep him in the program as some kind of worker going forward. We can't let him go. He's just that special to us," Alvarez said.
Chiaparini finished with 19 kills, Diaz 12. Martin led with 15 assists and Caleb Word had 14. Colby Mutter had 16 digs.
