Rams hunt down Buffaloes

BLUEFIELD – Men's volleyball returned to the court for the first time in 10 days, Friday evening at the Dome and defeated the Milligan University Buffaloes in three sets, 25-19, 25-12, 25-14.
Milligan scored the match's first point then Bluefield College rolled off four straight points to take the lead. The Buffaloes rallied and tied the first set at five and later seven. BC retook the lead on a smashing kill by Jariel Diaz. The teams battled within a point of each other until a pair of kills by General Smith gave the Rams a two-point lead. Again MU rallied to tie. Bluefield moved to a four-point lead at 17-13 and Milligan used its first time out. BC opened a seven-point lead in the latter part of the opening sent and went on to win 25-19.
BC drew first blood in the second set and quickly opened a six-point lead. The lead grew to eight midway through the set at 15-7. Milligan called time down 17-9. Devon Robinson's kill gave Bluefield its largest lead at 18-9. Robinson's ace gave the Rams a 10-point advantage and the Rams went on to take set two 25-12.
Bluefield took command in the third set. Tony Martin's ace gave the Rams a five-point edge that grew to eight. An ace by Alberto Chiaparini moved the BC lead to 12 at 20-8. The Rams went on to take the third and deciding set 25-14.
Rams head coach Alfonso Alvarez was back on the sidelines after being in COVID protocol for nearly three weeks.
"A big shout out goes to Buddy Gallemore and our assistant coach Mike Jacobs for holding the fort,down, if you will, and keeping the guys going and keeping them ready and prepared. Just a real special shout out goes to those two guys for keeping everybody going," Alvarez said. "It was just real special to get back in the gym yesterday. We got after it pretty good in practice yesterday and we kind of felt good going into today and this match. I'm just really thrilled to be back on campus and in the gym."
Alvarez further discussed the importance of the victory.
"We've played a couple of really tight matches that we felt we should have won, and just to get out here pull one off and just do it the way we wanted to do it means the world to us. I think we will walk into our next match with a big confidence booster and I hope it carries over to next week," Alvarez said.
Diaz led Bluefield with seven kills. Colby Mutter had nine digs and Caleb Word 15 assists.
