Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

Eagles land on Rams

BLUEFIELD – Men's volleyball returned to the court Monday night and fell to the Midway University Eagles in four sets in a Mid-South Conference match.
The match's initial serve sailed out of bounds to give the Rams a 1-0 lead and that lead went to 2-0 on the next rally. Midway tied at two. The teams battled each point, neither team with more than a two-point lead until the Eagles went up 14-11. MU went ahead 18-14 and Bluefield called its first time out of the set. BC fell down by five at 24-19. Midway went on to take set one 25-20.
Set two was as close as the first set as a point separated the teams until Midway opened a three-point lead, 10-7. Midway pulled ahead by five, 18-13 and the Rams called time to regroup. Down seven late, the Rams rallied to within three before the Eagles took the set 25-21.
BC opened a 2-0 lead in the third set thanks to a service ace by Alberto Chiaparini. Back-to-back aces by Colby Mutter ace put Bluefield up by four. MU rallied to tie at 10. Down by three BC tied on three straight points, the last another ace by Chiaparini that made it 16-all. Midway held the lead late in the set. Bluefield tied and took the lead on a kill by Jariel Diaz, the set winner was on a Chiaparini kill. Final score in set three, Rams 26, Eagles 24.
The third set saw Midway take an early lead and hold it throughout. The Eagles went up by seven, and later eight and claimed the set and match 25-17.
Jariel Diaz had a career high 24 kills and 12 digs for BC. Chiaparini had 11 kills, six digs and three service aces. Caleb Word had 31 assists, while Colby Mutter had 13 digs.
"We knew coming in that a couple of players they had were really tough to handle. I really didn't think we couldn't stop them at some point. It took us a little bit and finally in the third set we had some success and that let us get into the fourth. We ran out of gas in the fourth," said Rams head coach Alfonso Alvarez.
"We're going to have a good long talk about that, we are going to address that in practice. I really think what happened tonight was we would be neck-and-neck there for a while, then all of a sudden we'd lose a point and that snowballed into three, or four points by the time we blinked. That happened too quickly for us, we couldn't clean it up and I think that's indicative of a young team."
