Rams shoot down Bears in opener

BLUEFIELD - Jermiah Jenkins drilled a three with 1.5 seconds on the clock to cap a Bluefield University comeback and give the Rams a 65-63 win over Truett McConnell University, Saturday afternoon in the season and conference opener at the Dome Gymnasium.
Early in the game it was a three-point shooting exhibition as the first three baskets were threes. The teams then settled into a rhythm and Truett McConnell took a slim 34-32 lead into the halftime break.
The Bears expanded their lead as high as 13 points in the second half 58-45 with just over eight minutes remaining. BU closed the game on a 20-5 run, including Jenkins' three in the waning seconds to claim the win.
Rob Littlejohn topped the Bluefield scoring  column with 23 points. He added six rebounds. Brandon Shields tallied 12 points for the Rams, coming on four treys. Volante Carroll pulled down 11 rebounds.
E.J. Smith led TMU with 18 points and Enocka Franky had a game-high 15 rebounds.
"I know we just had to stick with it. We struggled from the free throw line, which is kind of different for us. Forty-five percent , that's not us,We shot 52% in the second half. Those numbers are just not us," said Rams head coach Richard Morgan. "All in all, I knew if we just stuck together and kept playing something good would happen because it was just that kind of game. We knew something good would happen. We just stayed after it, did the best we could to hang in there despite a lot going on. But I tell you, it's great to see those guys hang together, come in at the last minute and knock it down. It's fitting that Jermiah Jenkins would get that last shot. "
The Rams are now 1-0 on the season and in the Appalachian Athletic Conference. BU travels to Union College, Tuesday for another AAC matchup.
