Faulkner pulls away late in offensive showcase

BLUEFIELD - The 15th ranked Faulkner Eagles pulled away late in the fourth quarter to defeat the Bluefield University Rams 52-42 in a game that produced more than 1,000 yards of offense. Antonio Strickland caught 1 passes for a school record 219 and Nathan Herstich came off the bench and threw for 405 yards, third best in school history.
Faulkner drew first blood after returning the opening kick inside the Bluefield redzone. The Rams defense tightened and the Eagles two minutes into the game kicked a 23-yard field goal. BU got on the board with 1:57 to play in the opening quarter with a six-yard pass from Herstich to Jaquan Ebron. Tanner Griffith's kick was good and the Rams were on top 7-3. After a Faulkner turnover Herstich connected with Strickland on a 59-yard pass play on the final snap of the first quarter. Griffith's kick made it 14-3.
 Kade Young ran 36 yards to give Faulkner its first touchdown early in the second and the kick made it 14-10. The Rams responded when Herstich and Matthew Trevillian teamed up for a 25-yard scoring play. Griffith booted the PAT to make it 21-10. Faulkner then drove 62 yards in six plays for a score with 29 seconds left before the half. Bluefield carried a 21-17 lead into the intermission.
Faulkner scored twice in the third quarter to go up 31-21 before the Rams got on the board with 1:49 left in the quarter when Herstich and Thomas Lee teamed up for a 47-yard scoring play. Griffith's kick pulled the Rams to within three at 31-28.
The Eagles pushed head 38-28 but the Rams again answered the bell when Ebron scored his second TD of the game, this one a 39-yard connection. Again Griffith's kick was true. Faulkner pulled away on a pair of touchdowns in the final three minutes before BU scored on a 75-uard play from Herstich to Ebron to make it 52-42.
Herstich completed 25-of-37 passes for 405 yards and six touchdowns with an interception. Strickland caught 15 balls for 219 yards, Ebron hauled in 10 passes for 167 yards and three scores.
Defensively DaMarcus Wimbush led the Rams with 14 tackles, while Tavarius Corbitt had 11 and Sam Kirtley 10.
Young led Faulkner with 23-of-40 passing for 316 yards. He added 106 on the ground, accounting for 423 yards.
Bluefield finished with 544 yards, Faulkner 567.
