BLUEFIELD – Football gained its first win of the season Saturday night with a 57-14 Mid-South Conference Appalachian Division win over the Union Bulldogs at Mitchell Stadium.
Union took the opening kickoff and drove to the Rams' 34 before turning the ball over on a punt. A hold on BC on the punt pinned the Rams on their own seven for their first possession of the game. After a penalty, three straight runs and BC was in Union territory.
Aidan Wilder's keeper gave the Rams a first down at the six. Two plays later Wilder kept around right end for the score.
Tanner Griffith booted the extra point and with 6:39 to play in the quarter the Rams were on the board with a 7-0 lead.
After a nine-yard punt the Rams got the ball back at the Union 39-yard line. The drive was capped when Wilder connected with
Jaquan Ebron on a 29-yard post pass. Griffith's kick was true and it was 14-0 with 1:59 to play in the first.
On their third possession of the game and the first play of the second quarter Wilder connected once again with
Jaquan Ebron, this time for 69 yards for a score. Griffith's kick was good and the Rams' lead moved to 21-0.
Bluefield got the ball right back when
Greg Amos picked off a Union pass at the BC 26. The Rams made it 28-0 when Wilder and Ebron made the connection for the third time, this one from 28 yards out. Griffith's kick was good with 3:11 to go in the half.
The lead went to 35-0 when Wilder passed to
Greg Ebron from seven yards out and Griffith kicked the PAT.
Union got on the board with a 31-yard pass and on the ensuing kickoff
Tyrice Henry took it to the house 93 yards for a Bluefield score. Griffith's kick was wide and the Rams carried a 41-7 lead to the intermission.
The Rams amassed 316 yards of offense in the first half, 167 in the air and
Jaquan Ebron had three catches and 127 yards and three first half touchdowns.
BC drove into the Union red zone on its first possession of the second half, but back-to-back sacks took the Rams out of field goal range and forced BC to punt.
The Rams added two punts when a Union snap sailed out of the back of the end zone with 6:22 to play in the third, making the score 43-7. After the free kick, Bluefield drove the field and
Xavier Freeman toted the pigskin the final 18 yards for the score. Griffith's kick made it 50-7 with 4:18 to play in the third quarter.
Union failed to cover the ensuing kick and the Rams three plays later scored on Freeman's three-yard run. Griffith's kick made it 57-7.
Union scored the final points of the night to make it 57-14.
Bluefield finished the night with 484 total yards, Union with 311.
Wilder finished the night 7-of-8 passing for 188 yards with four touchdowns.
Jaquan Ebron had four catches for 148 yards, three of those catches for touchdowns.
Greg Ebron had the other TD catch for Bluefield.
Xavier Freeman rushed 19 times for 114 yards for Bluefield and
Tavis White carried 19 times for 95 yards.
Defensively
Sam Kirtley and
DaMarcus Wimbush each had 10 tackles and Henry had six. Henry, Amos and Charles Turner each picked off passes.
