BLUEFIELD – Women's volleyball opened Appalachian Athletic Conference play Thursday night at the Dome, and the Union Bulldogs claimed a three-set win over the Rams.
Game one saw Union jump to a 4-1 lead. The Rams pulled to within one, only to see the Bulldogs pull back ahead and eventually gain their biggest margin of the set at the end with a 25-14 decision.
In the second game the Rams took an early 6-4 lead but Union tied at eight and then nine. The Bulldogs then scored four straight, forcing BC to call time. Union then went on a 5-2 run to make it 18-11 when Bluefield called its final timeout of the second game. The Rams rallied late and closed to within three on two occasions, but it was as close as they could get as Union claimed a 25-20 lead.
Union scored the first four points of game three and built a five-point lead. The Rams pulled to within a point, but the Bulldogs scored four unanswered to go up 15-10. The Rams charged back and got to within three of the lead on two occasions, but again Union pulled away late for the 25-20.
The Rams are now 2-5 overall and 0-1 in the AAC. Their next match is Saturday afternoon at Bryan.
