WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. — The University of the Cumberlands (8-1, 3-1) claimed a 50-17 Mid-South Conference Appalachian Division victory over Bluefield College on Saturday night at Taylor Stadium.
Bluefield (3-5, 0-2), which upset the Patriots 22-10 last season, trailed 17-0 at halftime, and never got any closer after the break.
Cason Whitt helped the Rams cut into a 24-0 third quarter deficit with a 9-yard run. Whitt later threw a 17-yard scoring pass to Charles Black, while Tanner Griffith kicked a 35-yard field goal and made a pair of extra point kicks.
Whitt was 13-for-33 for 194 yards and a score for the Rams, which had 274 offensive yards, while giving up 451 to the Patriots. Antonio Strickland had six receptions for 100 yards and Jaquan Ebron added four catches for 64 yards. Bluefield was held to 50 yards rushing on 30 carries, led by Malik Brown, who had 23 yards on the ground. Drake Presley punted 10 time for the Rams for a 26.6 yard average. DaMarcus Wimbush had 11 tackles.
Bluefield will visit Union in Kentucky on Saturday before completing its season with consecutive home games against Pikeville — for homecoming on Nov. 3 — followed by a Nov. 10 finale with Point.
