BLUEFIELD – On a night where Ellen Johnson picked up her 1,000th career kill, Johnson and the Bluefield College Rams claimed a 3-0 win over the Milligan College Buffaloes, Tuesday at the Dome Gymnasium. It was the Rams' fourth consecutive victory and evened the team's record at 9-9 overall and 6-2 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference.
The Rams opened a quick 3-0 lead on the Buffaloes only to see the visitors battle back to even the score at three and take the lead and trailing 9-7 Bluefield called time. Following the timeout the Rams drew even at 10 and then tied the set at 11 before retaking the lead and pulling ahead 13-11. Milligan scored four straight to retake the lead 15-13 only to see BC charge back and retake the lead 16-15. The set proved to be close throughout with neither team holding more than a three-point advantage until late in the set. With the score 19-16 in favor of the Rams, Milligan called time. The Rams' biggest lead came at 21-17 at which time the Buffaloes called their second timeout. A 4-2 run for Bluefield closed out the set and gave the Rams a 25-19 win
In the second set BC held an early 3-1 lead before Milligan tied things at four and again at seven. Four straight points gave the Rams an 11-7 lead and Milligan used its first timeout of the second set. BC's lead grew as high as five, and later six points. The Buffaloes erased the Rams lead and with only a two point lead, 20-18, BC called time. Milligan would not go away as they pulled within a point a 23-22 and BC called its second timeout of the set. The Rams scored the final two points to claim a 25-22 win.
Milligan scored the first two points of set three, but the Rams reeled off six unanswered to take a 6-2 lead. The Rams' lead grew to 10 at 17-7. The Rams took a 21-12 lead on Johnson's 1,000th career kill and later moved ahead 22-12. BC took the win 25-14 and claimed the victory over Milligan.
Johnson finished the night with nine kills and 10 digs. Lexie Mocarski had 16 kills and 10 digs, while the AAC Setter of the Week, Camry McCroskey, finished with 37 assists and seven digs.
Milligan drops to 5-12 overall and 3-5 in the conference.
The Rams are back in action Thursday night at Concord.
