BLUEFIELD – Women's volleyball won its second straight conference match Friday night, beating Point University in three sets at the Dome Gymnasium, 26-21, 26-24, 25-18.
In game one, the Rams jumped to a 3-0 lead and made it 6-1 on an ace by Kaitlyn Shaver. BC's biggest lead was six at 10-4 before Point battled back to within two points, twice, at 13-11 and 15-13. Ellen Johnson's kill put BC back ahead by four at 18-14 and Point called time. Three unanswered scores by Point made it a one-point game at 18-17 and Bluefield called time. After a tie at 20, the Rams out-scored the Skyhawks 5-1 to claim the first game of the match 25-21.
The second game saw the teams battle back and forth with numerous ties and neither team gaining more than a two-point advantage. Two consecutive scores by Bluefield put the Rams on top 15-13 and another kill by Johnson made it 16-13 at which time Point called time. Bluefield's biggest lead of the set came at 20-14, but Point closed the gap to one, 20-19. After a timeout BC forged ahead 22-19 only to see Point respond and draw even at 22. The Rams pulled ahead 24-23 only to see Point draw even at 24. BC went up 25-24 and claimed the game 26-24.
The battle continued in the third game as each early point saw the squads knotted.
The Rams pulled away with four straight scores to lead 17-13. BC went on a 8-5 run to win the game and claim the match.
Camry McCroskey led the charge for Bluefield with 33 assists. She added nine kills and eight digs. Mocarski, Johnson and Paige Fisher each had nine digs and Johnson added 10 kills. Shaver and Mocarski had nine kills apiece.
The Rams are now 5-8 overall and 2-1 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference. Point drops to 5-4 overall and 1-1 in the AAC. The Rams return to the court Saturday morning as they host another AAC foe from Georgia, Reinhardt University. Match time is 11 a.m.
