Ruiz pitches Rams past Alice Lloyd in Series opener

Box Score MASON, Ohio - Daniel Ruiz struck out 10 batters and scattered six hits in pitching a complete game and leading the Bluefield College Rams to a 7-1 win over the Alice Lloyd College Eagles, Wednesday afternoon in the Rams' first game of the National Christian College Athletic Association World Series at Legacy Park in Mason, Ohio.
After a shaky start in which ALC scored the game's first run in the third, Ruiz took control and shut down the Eagles, while the Bluefield offense pounded out 16 hits for the win.
Bluefield got on the board in the bottom of the fifth with a leadoff single by Joey Smith. Jose Perez followed with a sacrifice bunt and Bobby Mena singled to put runners on the corners. Erik Williams singled to score Smith and tie the game at one. Jordan Jackson later had a two-out single to score Mena and Matt Ferreira singled to bring home Williams and make it 3-1.
The Rams added a run in the sixth with an RBI single by Perez that scored Xavier Salas. Salas was a courtesy runner for catcher Austin Browning, who had singled. Browning followed in the seenth inning with a two-run double to deep left that made it 6-1 and the Rams' final run of the game came in the eighth when Williams doubled and brought home Perez.
Eight of Bluefield's nine batters hit safely in the game, led by Williams and Nolan Soto, who each had three hits. Perez, Mena, Browning and Smith had a pair of hits apiece. Williams and Browning each had two RBIs.
The win avenged two losses in the NCCAA Mid-East Regional to Alice Lloyd, the Series' #4 seed, and Bluefield now has a 31-29 record. The Rams, the #8 seed will take on #5 Campbellsville at 10 a.m., tomorrow (Thursday), and  #9 Ecclesia at 4 p.m. Both games are set for Legacy Field, which is an all-synthetic surface. Bluefield concludes pool play Friday at 2 p.m. against #1 Oklahoma Baptist. The semifinals and finals are set for Saturday.
