Box Score 4 JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Bluefield College baseball team opened the 2017 season taking three of four games against Edward Waters College.
The homestanding Tigers took the first game of the series 2-1 on Saturday, Feb. 11 when Jordan Pontious hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Bluefield's run came on a solo home run by
Erik Williams.
Chaz Miller suffered the pitching loss.
Saturday's nightcap saw the Rams come out on top 6-5.
Six different Bluefield players hit safely and
Austin Browning had a two-run double.
Kyle Harris worked five innings to get the win. He allowed two runs on four hits and struck out three. Miller pitched two innings to get the save. He allowed a run on three hits and struck out three.
The Rams took the first game Sunday afternoon 5-4 as Williams went 3-for-4. BC got on the board in the first when
Hunter Burnette hit a grand slam home run. Burnette finished the game 2-for-3 with five RBIs.
Caleb Newman earned the victory as he gave up two runs on four hits in four innings. Miller, working his third straight game, got his second save of the season.
Bluefield rolled in the series finale 11-5.
Edgar Reyes took the win in relief as he pitched two-and-two-third innings and did not allow a hit or a run. He struck out three.
Williams was 3-for-4,
Nolan Soto was 3-for-3 with a home run.
Joey Smith was 3-for-3, Browning 2-for-3 and Burnette hit his second home run of the young season and drove in two runs.
The Rams host Rio Grande in a three game series beginning Saturday afternoon at 3:00 at Bowen Field. The Rams and Storm then play a doubleheader on Sunday beginning at noon.
