BLUEFIELD, Va. - The first land battle of the Civil War was fought in what is now Phillipi, W.Va. Alderson-Broaddus University overlooks the historic battlefield and its teams are called the Battlers. Tuesday night at the Dome Gymnasium the BC volleyball team shot first, but A-B won the battle against Bluefield in four sets.
BC took command early, running out to an 8-1 lead at which time the visitors called time. BC's lead grew as high as 10 at 21-11 before Alderson-Broaddus battled back to within eight at 24-16 before the Rams took the 25-16 victory.
Game two saw ties early before the visitors pulled ahead 5-4. A-B continued to grow its lead and won the set 25-15. Game three of the match belonged to the Battlers who pulled ahead early and maintained its lead. Bluefield drew to within six of the lead at 21-15 only to see the visitors closed the game on a 4-0 run and win 25-15 and even the match at a game apiece.
The third and fourth sets went to Alderson-Broaddus both by the score of 25-16.
The Rams play their final home game of the season Thursday night as they host Bryan College. It will be Senior Night and opening serve is scheduled for 6:30.
