Point stops Rams

BLUEFIELD  - The Bluefield Rams made their 2015 home debut Saturday afternoon before an enthusiastic crowd at Mitchell Stadium, but for the second time this season the ball did not bounce the Rams' way as the Point University Skyhawks spoiled the day with a 50-27 win.
Point opened a 13-0 lead in the game's first seven minutes on a seven yard pass from Charles Fortis to Rodel Shorter and a 75-yard run by Brandon Robertson.
Bluefield charged back and scored on a 41 yard run by Sam Bennett, his first of two scores on the afternoon. Drake Presley's kick made it 13-7. Point led 20-7 after one quarter of action.
The Skyhawks took advantage of Bluefield miscues and scored twice more in the second quarter and led 34-7 at the break.
In the third period the teams played even, both putting a TD on the board, Bluefield's points coming when Denzel Cudjoe blocked David Strickland's punt. The ball bounded into the end zone where Mason Maples covered it for a score.
In the fourth, Adrian Pope ran four yards for a touchdown and Sam Bennett capped the Rams' scoring on the day with a one yard run.
Bennett finished the day with 106 yards on 17 attempts, leading the Bluefield offense. Rodrell Smith carried four times for 56 yards and Adrian Pope ran for 40 yards. Shane Milhorne carried eight times for 38 yards in the fourth period.
Harry Casseus led the Rams defense as he had 12 tackles and Gabe Spencer had seven.
For the game Point had 494 total yards of offense, 292 on the ground and 202 through the air. Quarterback Charles Fortis completed 14-of-26 passes for 199 yards and ran for an additional 20. Brandon Robertson ran for 105 yards including a touchdown run of 75 yards.
Bluefield's quarterbacks completed only two-of seven passes.
The Rams return to Mitchell Stadium on Saturday as the host Faulkner University. It will be Military Appreciation Day and all active duty military will be admitted for free. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m.
