BLUEFIELD, Va. -- Four multi-run innings from Bryan College boosted the visitors to the 13-4 victory over Bluefield College on Thursday afternoon, as the Rams began their final series of the season.
The Lions (36-14, 14-9 AAC) started with a three-run first, but were aided by three Bluefield (23-23, 7-18 AAC) errors. An error opened the game and Bryan made Bluefield pay, as a two-run homer made it 2-0. After two more errors in the frame, just one more run was plated for the 3-0 Lion lead.
Starter
Kaleb Houchins (2-5) settled in for a couple innings, but the Lions awoke in the fourth, scoring five runs on four hits.
Meanwhile, Bryan's Chad Burrows (6-3) allowed just one baserunner through the first three innings. A
Chris McCollister single began a two-run inning for Bluefield in the fourth. After advancing to second on a passed ball, McCollister scored on a
Tyler Timmer double. Timmer then moved to third as
Jacob Schober reached on an error. The shortstop then scored on a double-play ball to make it 8-2, Bryan.
However, the Lions came back with three more in the fifth--once again taking advantage of a Ram error. A solo homer led off the inning, while a missed fly led to two later unearned runs in the frame as Bryan opened the game to an 11-2 margin.
Timmer sent his team-leading sixth home run of the season over the left field wall in the sixth, and the Rams added one more run thanks to a bases loaded walk in the eighth for their final two runs.
Bryan tacked on two runs in the ninth for the 13-4 final.
Timmer led Bluefield, going 3-for-5 and coming up just a triple shy of the cycle and claiming two RBI. Schober went 2-for-4 for the only other multi-hit performance from the Rams.
The No. 3-6 batters for Bryan combined for six hits and nine RBI on the afternoon en route to the victory, being led by Kevin Roberts' 2-for-4 with three RBI.
Bluefield and Bryan return to action at Bowen on Friday at 2 p.m. The Rams will honor the program's seniors between games of the doubleheader.
