Rams edged by Skyhawks in AAC series finale

BLUEFIELD, Va. -- Bluefield and Point combined for 27 hits in the Appalachian Athletic Conference series finale at Bowen Field on Sunday, but Point took the 12-8 victory to claim the weekend series.

A three-run second inning pushed Bluefield (22-18, 6-13) to a 3-1 advantage, but the visitors scored in their next four innings to take a 10-5 lead. Bluefield pulled back within two behind a three-run sixth, but Point (19-24, 11-10 AAC) held the Rams scoreless the rest of the way while adding two more of their own for a 12-8 victory.

Five Rams tallied a pair of hits, led by Ryan Lawson's 2-for-3 day with four RBI. The center fielder had a two-run single in the second inning and blasted a two-run home run off the scoreboard in left-center field in the sixth inning, helping the Rams trim the deficit back to two.

Garrett Schilling, Will Kane, Nic Ratliff and Dan Copeland each added two-hit days.

Tyler Timmer, Kane and Copeland added the Rams' three other RBI.

Rhett Jones claimed the win for Point, tossing five innings and allowing five runs, just two of which were earned. Zach Tapia took the loss for Bluefield, as Point took the lead off the freshman in the fourth inning and never trailed again.

Cory Niten started for the Rams, allowing five runs in three innings of work. Seven Rams took the mound in all for Bluefield. Chaz Miller (1.2 IP) and Trayvond Brooks (1.0 IP) were the only two to hold Point scoreless in their outings.

The Rams are back at it on Monday, making up a pair of AAC contests with Milligan College. The doubleheader is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start.
