Win streak snapped, but Rams take DH split with Tennessee Temple

BLUEFIELD, Va. -- While the Bluefield College baseball team's seven-game win streak was snapped with a 6-5 defeat to Tennessee Temple University Tuesday at Bowen Field, the Rams took the second game of the doubleheader by a 6-2 margin for the split on the day.

The 1-1 day moves the Rams to 20-12 for the year, marking the eighth 20-win season for 10th-year head coach Mike White. Tennessee Temple moved to 14-6 with the split.

Game 1
Tennessee Temple built a 6-0 lead before the Rams were able to get on the scoreboard. The Crusaders used a single run in both the second and fifth innings, while a four-run fourth inning chased starter Chaz Miller and gave the visitors a healthy cushion.

After the first two Rams were retired to open the fifth, three-straight hits plated a pair of runs. Chris McCollister's single to left was followed by a triple to deep left center from Tyler Timmer. Will Kane then send a single to left to score Timmer and make it a 6-2 ball game.

Zach Tapia retired the Crusaders in order in the sixth and the Rams battled back with three more in the bottom half. Sawyer McLamb led off with his fourth hit of the game, while Ben Rife was hit by a pitch and Tyler Rome was walked to load the bases with one out. Ryan Lawson grounded out to plate one and Timmer came back with a single to left to score two.

Tapia sat down TTU in order again in the seventh to hold it at a 6-5 game. The Rams placed their first two runners on base and a sacrifice bunt from Nic Ratliff advanced the runners, but a strikeout and fly out sealed the win for the visitors.

Left-hander Hunter Giles claimed the win for the Crusaders, while Chaz Miller (5-3) took the loss for the Rams, going 3.1 innings and allowing three runs on five hits. Dylan Cole went 1.2 for Bluefield, also allowing three runs with just one being earned.

Timmer went 3-for-4 in the opener with three RBI, while McLamb was a perfect 4-for-4 ad the dish.

Game 2
The Rams brought two runs across in the bottom of the first, scoring one on a bases-loaded walk and the other on a Ratliff single.

Tennessee Temple came back with two in their next at-bat though, as a two-out double scored a pair.

From the bottom of the second through the top of the sixth inning, pitchers for both teams faced the minimun number of batters. Both teams had one player reach base during the span, but both were caught stealing.

The Rams broke the trend in the bottom of the sixth and broke the game open with four runs. Timmer led off the frame with a single, while Kane followed with his team-leading 12th double of the season.

Sawyer McLamb sent a sacrifice fly to center field to score Timmer, in what was nearly a play at the plate but the Crusaders' catcher couldn't corral the toss from center. After Ratliff was hit by a pitch, Lawson sent a drive to deep right-center field and legged out a triple. Tennessee Temple's throw to get Lawson at third went astray and Lawson advanced home for the 6-2 Rams lead.

After a pair of walks from reliever Luke Harris, Dylan Cole came in and retired the Crusaders in order for the Rams' victory.

Harris took the win (2-0), while Allen Davidson, Jr. had the loss despite a six-inning outing. Harris tossed 2.0 innings for the Rams, following a 4.0 inning, three-hit outing from starter Trayvond Brooks.

The Rams host No. 10 Tennessee Wesleyan on Friday, as the Appalachian Athletic Conference series opens with a nine-inning game at 6 p.m.
