Rams drop two to Thomas, Sunday afternoon

THOMASVILLE, Ga. -- Bluefield dropped both games against Thomas University, Sunday, as the hosting Night Hawks plated two runs in the sixth inning of game one for a 6-5 win and held off BC in game two, 6-4, for the sweep.

Bluefield finished its opening weekend with a 1-3 mark. Thomas moved to 5-2 on the young season with the two wins.

Game 1
Bluefield managed 11 hits in the contest, with starting pitcher Mike Thomas going 3-for-4 at the plate.

A Daniel Copeland single drove in Jacob Schober in the first inning, after Schober led off the game with a single. Ryan Lawson opened the third frame with a single and later scored on a Schober sacrifice for the 2-0 lead.

Thomas came back with a single run in the third and three in the fourth to take a 4-2 lead.

BC came back to tie it with a pair of runs in the fifth, as Lawson and Schober scored on singles from Thomas and Garrett Schilling.

Pinch hitting, Will Kane earned a lead-off walk in the sixth and stole second to move into scoring position. Kane later scored thanks to three-straight walks, but the Rams couldn't continue the rally.

But, Thomas answere with two runs in the bottom half, as Leo Benjamin began the frame with a double. A pair of sacrifice bunts scored a pinch-running Brent Slaughter, while Corey Conway reached base on a walk and was driven in with a Jalbert Melo double.

Bluefield put had two runners reach on a walks in the seventh, but the Rams couldn't take advantage of the situation.

Thomas tossed 3.1 innings to start things off for the Rams. Dylan Ruth was credited with the loss.

Game 2
In the finale, Bluefield scored in the first inning thanks to an RBI single from Schober, but Thomas came back with three in the bottom half.

The Night Hawks tacked on another in the third, before BC plated two in the fourth thanks to Chris McCollister's first career homerun.

A two-run single in the fifth earned Thomas some insurance at 6-3, which BC could not overcome.

McCollister doubled to lead off the Rams' final chance and scored on a double from Schober who tallied his second RBI of the game. Garrett Schilling added a two-out single to advance Schober, but a fly out to right sealed the game for Thomas.

Kaleb Houchins was credited with the loss, as the starter tossed two innings and surrendered three runs. Four more Rams--Trayvond Brooks, Luke Harris, Cory Niten and Seth Dewey--each tossed an inning.

Bluefield returns to action on Friday, playing the first of two doubleheaders against Asbury College. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. both Friday and Saturday.
