BC splits on opening day against Webber

BABSON PARK, Fla -- The Bluefield baseball team split its season-opening doubleheader on Saturday, following up a 5-1 defeat with a 9-1 win against Webber International.

Game 1
Webber grabbed a 3-0 lead through two innings, before BC plated its first run of the season. A two-out double from Ryan Lawson paid off as Chris McCollister followed with an RBI single.

But, that would be all the scoring for Bluefield in the season opener, while Webber tacked on two more in the bottom of the fifth en route to the 5-1 win.

Lawson came away with two hits for BC and added a stolen base, while McCollister and catcher Garrett Schilling each had a base knock.

Chaz Miller took the loss, giving up seven hits and three earned runs in four innings of work.

Game 2
Bluefield found its offense in game two though, and quickly built a 3-0 lead through two frames.

Lawson led off the game with a single and later stole second. A two-out single from Jacob Schober plated Lawson for the 1-0 lead.

Alex Haas then sat down the Warriors in order in the bottom half. Schilling led off the second with a solo shot. Nic Ratliff followed with a double, advanced to third on a groundout and scored on a Sawyer McLamb sacrifice fly to center to make it 3-0.

Haas retired WIU in order again, and the Rams started off their third-straight inning with a hit. McCollister singled, then later scored on a Thomas single for a 4-0 lead.

The Warriors plated one in the bottom half, but the Rams came back with a three-run fourth frame. An error allowed McLamb to reach, while three-straight singles from McCollister, Tyler Timmer and Schober scored runs, extending the lead to 7-1.

Haas continued to keep the Warriors in check from the mound, and tossed five innings of one-hit ball while striking out five en route to the win.

The Rams tacked on two more runs in the seventh for the 9-1 final.
