Softball drops season-opening games at Averett

DANVILLE, Va. -- The Bluefield College softball team dropped its season-opening doubleheader at Averett University, with the Cougars taking 19-3 and 15-0 wins.

Bluefield (0-2) has reloaded its 2015 roster with 14 newcomers, while seven return from last season's three-victory squad. Meanwhile, Averett (2-0), who went 25-13 in 2014 is picked to finish second in the USA South this season.

Game 1
Tianna Macies put Bluefield on the board in the top of the third, as her single to right scored both Kasey Holcomb and Kaitlyn Pennington and trimmed the team's deficit to 4-2. Holcomb was hit by a pitch to reach base and Pennington reached on a fielder's choice.

Ali Bartley led off the fourth with an infield single, and later scored when a throwing error allowed Laura Kincer to reach base.

But, Bluefield would not score again in the contest. Averett came alive with five hits on its way to six runs in the bottom half of the fourth, opening its advantage to 10-3. Averett tacked on one more run in the fifth before a three-error inning from BC and six hits from the Cougars led to eight runs for the hosts and a 19-3 win in six innings.

Laura Craven threw three innings in her Bluefield debut, while Michaela Carter and Andrea Christian tossed two and one innings.

Bartley finished the game with a pair of hits, while Eryn Haley, Holcomb, Pennington, Macies, Craven and Kincer each added hits.

Shortstop Taylor Dix led Averett, driving in five runs on the day.

Game 2
In the finale, Bluefield was held two just a pair of hits and the hosts ran away with a 15-0 win. Haley and Morgan Stephens notched hits for the Lady Rams.

Three errors from Bluefield as well as five hits from Averett led the Cougars to 10 runs in the third inning, making it a 13-0 game. Two more runs came in the fourth before Averett claimed the win in the fifth.

Brienna Sparks started in the circle for BC, tossing 2.2 innings. Hali Saul added 1.1 innings.
